Installation & requirements

Which Macs are supported?

macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later, on both Apple silicon and Intel.

How do I install Tellshot?

Download the DMG, open it, and drag Tellshot.app into Applications. Tellshot is signed and notarized by Apple, so it opens without security warnings.

macOS says the app is damaged or can't be verified. What now?

This shouldn't happen with the DMG. If you ever see it, delete the app and reinstall from the latest DMG on the download page — older zip downloads could be corrupted by some browsers, which is why we switched to DMG.

I'm coming from Mendaco. What do I need to do?

Because the app identity changed, auto-update can't cross the rename. Download the Tellshot DMG once and drag it into Applications. Your templates and history carry over automatically; macOS will ask for Screen Recording permission once more. After confirming your data is there, you can delete the old Mendaco.

Permissions

Why does Tellshot need Screen Recording permission?

That's how macOS lets any app capture the screen. Tellshot uses it only at the moment you take a screenshot — nothing is recorded in the background.

Does Tellshot need Accessibility permission?

It's optional. If granted, Tellshot can also read UI element info (like button labels) around your pins, making the copied context richer. Tellshot never prompts for it; you can grant it yourself in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility.

I denied the permission by accident. How do I fix it?

Try capturing — Tellshot detects the missing permission, explains what to do, and gives you a one-click path to the right pane in System Settings. After enabling it, macOS asks you to quit and reopen the app; onboarding resumes where you left off.

Using Tellshot

Can I change the capture shortcuts?

Yes — Settings → Shortcuts lets you re-record all capture and copy shortcuts, with conflict detection against macOS defaults. “Restore All Defaults” brings back ⌥⇧5 / ⌥⇧6 / ⌥⇧7.

Why do I have to paste twice into ChatGPT?

ChatGPT's input can't accept an image and text in a single paste. Tellshot's ChatGPT and Cursor templates copy in two steps — paste the image, then paste the text. The Slack template pastes both at once, and custom templates can use either mode.

Can I customize the copied text format?

Fully. “Manage Templates…” lets you edit the built-in templates or create your own, with placeholders for the page title, URL, and your numbered comments.

Can I annotate an image I didn't capture with Tellshot?

Yes — menu-bar icon → “Import Image…” accepts a file or clipboard image, and it goes through the same editor.

How do I make a multi-page document?

Use “Add to Review” in the editor to collect up to 20 screenshots into one review document, reorder and title the pages, and export as PDF or PowerPoint. See the Guide for the full walkthrough.

Where are my screenshots saved?

Saved images go to Pictures/Tellshot by default (changeable in Settings → Save, including ask-every-time). Editing sessions are kept in History when you close the editor — 100 sessions by default.

Privacy & data

Do my screenshots leave my Mac?

No. Everything — OCR, detection, rendering — runs locally. There are no uploads, no accounts, and no telemetry on your images or text.

What data does Tellshot collect?

Only optional, anonymized crash reports (via Sentry), which never include your images, annotations, comments, history, or clipboard contents. Turn them off any time in Settings → General → Privacy.

I blurred something — is it really gone from the copy?

Yes, masks are burned into everything you copy, save, or export. One thing to know: History keeps the original image as captured, so you can re-edit later. If you don't want that, turn off “Save original images to History” in Settings → History.

Pricing & updates

Is Tellshot really free?

The beta is free. A paid license is planned for the 1.0 release — beta feedback shapes what it becomes.

How do updates work?

Tellshot checks for updates automatically and always asks before installing. You can also check manually from the menu-bar icon → “Check for Updates…”. See the Release Notes page for what's new.

Where do I report a bug or request a feature?

Email us at support@tellshot.com. For bugs, your macOS version, the Tellshot version (menu-bar icon → Settings → General), and a screenshot of what happened help a lot — Tellshot is rather good at making those.
